Surface gold mining is extracting gold from the earth by removing the soil and rock covering the mineral deposits. This process involves various techniques such as open-pit, strip, and placer mining. In open-pit mining, large pits are dug to access the ore, while strip mining involves stripping away layers of soil and rock. Placer mining focuses on extracting gold from alluvial deposits found in riverbeds and streams. These methods are preferred for their cost-effectiveness and efficiency in accessing near-surface gold deposits. However, they also have significant environmental impacts, including habitat destruction, soil erosion, and water pollution.
